Keep your AIRBRUSH CLEAN! | an EASY METHOD for COLOR SWAPS and end of session cleaning
The cleaning techniques that I use in this video are the ones that I use every single day to keep my airbrushes perfectly clean. The process is incredible simple, fast, and effective. It's basically about using lots of water to flush out the acrylic paint from the cup and within the airbrush, followed by some cleaner to remove any residual or dried paint. Even if there is some dried paint in the color cup at the end of the day, it is very easy to remove with some airbrush cleaner since the paint hasn't cured yet. Keeping an airbrush clean is all about not allowing paint to dry within the airbrush, so keep on top of it! It only takes a minute or two at the end of a painting session, so don't be afraid to use lots of water to make sure everything is flushed out. Best of luck in your painting!

Airbrush TIP DRY? Here's a SIMPLE solution

    Brilliant stuff - I love your channel. I just tried this technique and at the end the canvas itself is smooth but up close there’s so many scratches from the sanding that I can’t rid of. Do you think a dry sanding with 400 grit would help to get rid of those final scratches? I’m using it for large scale graphite drawing so I’m trying to get it as smooth as I can without the scratches. Thanks so much!

    The light coverage in the middle indicates paint is either too thin or pressure too high. With a fan cap thickness and pressure is more critical than with a round spray and takes a little patience and practice to get right.

    The best cleaner I've found for water based acrylics is denatured (not isopropyl) alcohol. Dried paint doesn't stand a chance against it. Been using it for years, no issues. I like the tip about leaving some distilled water in the cup during breaks. Gonna have to remember that one! 👍

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 7 годин тому

      Yes, denatured alcohol is an excellent cleaner for dried paint on the outside of the airbrush. But never spray that into the air! Same goes for isopropyl. You don't ever want to breath that in. Can be dangerous.

    I do exactly what you do plus… I DO leave distilled water in the cup (1/2 to 3/4 full) when I put my airbrush back on the stand at the end of a session. It never evaporates totally and often has a few flecks of paint in it that somehow got missed… I just tip it out and add a couple of drops of thinner before starting again.

    What I do when I clean my airbrush that I found very effective is to backflow the air back into the cup. I am able to get rid of the paint stuck in the nozzle better. I used to get dried paint clogging the nozzle more often but with the backflow method I don't get it anymore

    I have always had a love/hate relationship with my Inifinity. I just can't get consistent results, and precisely for the reason you mentioned: no consistency in the trigger control. When it works, it's amazing, when it doesn't, it's hell. I've never had this issue with my custom micron.

    The main problem is I understand is airbruah trigger reaponse. I watch a video titled making your infinity more reaponsive in the trigger. He added 2 ring after trigger to overcome the back action inconsistancy. Could you test the fix. If it works the only negative thing about this airbrush is solved.

    I'm surprised you're using hand soap to detect leaks. In industrial pneumatic leak checking and automotive air system leak checking like tires we only use dish soap as all hand soap does not create good bubbles equally but pretty much all dish soaps do. I've had many hand soaps fail at detecting small air leaks compared to using any type of dish detergent.

    I don't want a very smooth surface; I only want to refine the surface of the only reasonably priced stretched canvas that is available where I live. In other words, I want to fill those valleys partially and use a gesso that has the right amount of absorbency to be able to paint on it with oils in an expressionist or impressionist style. - so I can scumble, put down washes, build up impasto, etc., and enjoy the surface. Maybe this is the answer...?

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 3 дні тому

      100% agree with you. Sometimes I want texture on some canvases too- especially for oil paints. What I do for a somewhat smooth, but still visible and subtle canvas texture is use less gesso. No more than 3 coats of regular gesso, no more than 1 with super heavy gesso. I apply with a taping knife and then light wet sanding with 220 grit when dry. That way you will still see the texture and feel it under the paint.

    Hi! I'm thinking about trying airbrushing and wondering if I need an enclosure for it. How much does the paint travel when sprayed on large artworks? Do you happen to have a video on this that I've missed? Your vids are so good!! So very inspiring ✌️

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 3 дні тому

      thank you! When you spray with an airbrush, there is always going to be overspray in the air. Ventilation is helpful and extraction systems are ideal. I use acrylic paints reduced with distilled water and I wear a respirator, especially when spraying in larger areas like backgrounds.

    • @FreddieSmith-j9h
      @FreddieSmith-j9h 3 дні тому

      @theartworkshop thank you for your reply - I really appreciate it! Does the paint travel much and get on the nearby floor and walls? I'm just worried about damaging the room I'm in.... I'm wondering how Dexter I need to go... 😕 😅

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 3 дні тому

      @@FreddieSmith-j9h hahah! Well the overspray results in a fine dust that will get on a lot of things in your paint room. It's not like dried paint or paint splatter. It builds up over time the more you spray. Respirators and ventilation are the most important though. Health is number one, so non-toxic airbrush paint is a must.

      I've been using the illustration colors since they launched- over 10 years now. I love createx and their paints but I've been looking for something a bit stronger than the illustration line, yet still erasable. I was using golden acrylics like the high flow (used to be called golden airbrush colors) long before createx, so they will always be part of my lineup. I actually find a side cup easier to clean, because you can pop it off and rinse it off under the sink if you need too. Nice to have the option to replace the cup with a new one if needed as well. With that said, I still love my cm-b (small cup version). Can't go wrong with any of the microns.

    Ciao. Ho una domanda da farti a cui puoi rispondere solo tu. Quando dipingevo ad olio con le velature riuscivo ad ottenere una trasparenza dell'acqua quasi verosimile. Credi che si possa fare anche con l'aerografo? Se si hai qualche suggerimento? Grazie

      Yes, glazing transparent colors with an airbrush is something I do all the time. I would suggest painting a small study, something simple like a still life of an apple and try using transparent reds to glaze over the underpainting.

    So, I had to replace a needle packing screw in my Iwata HP-B recently. I've adjusted the needle with just a little tension. However, when I tried it out with the new needle packing screw, air flow was fine, but paint would not com out. Paint (Tamiya) was thinned 50/50, but still no paint coming out even with the normal air flow. Nozzle (.2mm) is clear and needle passes through the needle packing screw fine. Not sure what I did wrong or what needs to be adjusted. The original needle packing screw had a rubber seal while the replacement is the white teflon type. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    I am trying to figure out what is the best support for the erasure technique with oak dowel and pencil eraser. What do you think about it?

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 6 днів тому

      Definitely not canvas or a gesso surface! Gesso has more tooth and holds the paint too securely for a dowel. Synthetic paper is best for those techniques. LanaVanguard is a pretty good option for this, but I recommend trying out small samples of different substrates and see what works best for you. Best of luck!

    Actually, it isn't a rumor. GSI Creos are made in the same factories as IWATA (can't remember the name). In fact, 90% of Japan's airbrush companies are made by the same machining corportation, and in the same factories. They just have different branding and slightly different specifications determined by each company. IWATA many decades ago is the company that eventually bought out Olympos, which were the best in the business, and they also bought their patents and learned alot of their manufacturing process. TLDR: GSI Creos are on par with most of Iwatas lineup under $200. The reason a Platinum Pro Con Boy is quite a bit cheaper than an Eclipse is almost entirely due to brand name recognition, and the massive budget of marketing that Iwata has compared to Mr. Hobby line of airbrush. Especially on an international level.

    This is awesome. Thank you! I left a comment / question on your previous video. I wonder about type of roller you would recommend and see below that someone commented they recommend a foam roller. Could you comment on the best type of roller that won't leave lint etc?

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop 6 днів тому

      Glad it's helpful! I generally use the cheapest rollers I can find and just blot the roller with some blue painters tape. That will remove any lint!
